The year 2005 was yet another that witnessed the surfacing of fresh new talents both on the small and big screen.
But among them there were an exceptional few that should be stepping further into the spotlight in the New Year.
The following are some rookies that audiences should be seeing much more of in the months to come.
Lee Jun-ki
In the entertainment world, sexually ambiguity may work or it may fail miserably. In the case of this 23-year-old catalogue model-turned-actor who made his screen debut in last year¡¯s ``Flying Boys,¡¯¡¯ it seems to be the former. Within a year, Lee has gone from playing supporting roles to leads, as can be seen in his second feature film ``The King and the Clown,¡¯¡¯ currently in theaters. Lee was also the number one searched for actor on a local portal Web site for 11 days straight, giving him the record for this year. Fans can also catch him on the SBS drama ``My Girl¡¯¡¯ as he plays the love interest of actress Lee Da-hye.
Han Hyo-joo
When Sung Yu-ri pulled out of ``Spring Waltz,¡¯¡¯ the upcoming drama by ``Winter Sonata¡¯¡¯ creator Yoon Suk-ho, days before its first shoot, producers had no time to lose. To the surprise of many, they announced her replacement to be Han Hyo-joo, an 18-year-old who was discovered at a teenage beauty pageant. Han, a Dongguk University theater major whose only experience acting was a brief stint on a sitcom, is now to star opposite one of 2005¡¯s biggest stars, Daniel Henney. And she has a big year, not to mention role, ahead of her. Much of 2005 was spent on the set of ``My Boss, My Hero 2,¡¯¡¯ which will hit theaters later this month. ``Spring Waltz¡¯¡¯ will start airing sometime in the first half of next year. It has also completed its paperwork to be exported to at least 20 different countries.
Lee Young-ah
Eighteen-year-old Lee Young-ah was just an average college freshman _ a dance major at Hanyang University _ from Kumi, North Kyongsang Province, when she was discovered walking the streets of Seoul by a talent agent. Within months, she was the face of McDonald¡¯s Chinese ad campaign. This year, Lee had already delivered roles in two different dramas before KBS¡¯s weeknight soap ``Golden Apple¡¯¡¯ airwaves two months ago. But it was through this production Lee got people to notice that she is more than just another pretty face _ more, as in leading lady-material. She proved this by picking up the lead role in the upcoming MBC¡¯s daily prime time drama ``Sarangun Amudo Motmallyo.¡¯¡¯ She will star opposite popular singer/actor Hong Kyong-min, who is also up for his biggest role yet. The drama¡¯s first episode airs tomorrow at 8:20 p.m.
David McGinnis
Daniel Henney may have been ``the man of 2005.¡¯¡¯ Not only did he garner many lady fans but he also paved the way for other actors of mixed ethnicity. Before 2005, such actors¡¯ presence was nearly non-existent. But little known fact: For McGinnis, playing Jang Dong-kun¡¯s right hand man in this year¡¯s biggest blockbuster ``The Typhoon¡¯¡¯ was not his first acting job. He had starred in John H. Lee¡¯s 1999 low budget film ``The Cut Runs Deep.¡¯¡¯ The half German-Scottish and half-Korean 32-year-old Wisconsin native also served as the spokesperson for SK Telecom for nearly two years. Since then he has kept out of the public eye, but his performance in ``Typhoon¡¯¡¯ seems to have thrust him into the limelight.
Kim Ah-jung
Before 2005 virtually nothing was known of Kim Ah-jung. Now, with all of 2006 ahead of her, she can proudly say that she already has one supporting and two leading roles in soap operas under her belt. She also starred alongside Kim Ju-hyuk and Bong Tae-gyu in ``Kwangsik and Kwangtae,¡¯¡¯ one of this past fall¡¯s most popular comedies to show in local theaters. The number of ad campaigns the 23-year-old has done is more than all her acting stints combined. Kim, who can be seen on the KBS1 daily primetime drama ``Pyollan Yoja, Pyollan Namja,¡¯¡¯ has been nominated for Best Female Breakthrough Performance award at the both the KBS and SBS yearend actors awards.
Kang Ji-hwan
The television drama ``Be Strong Geumsoon¡¯¡¯owed its success to several different factors. Good directing, smart writing and last but not least the performances delivered by the drama¡¯s cast. Kang, a 26-year-old whose roots are based in musicals, has done bits and pieces in several television productions, but it was his impressive delivery in ``Be Strong Geumsoon¡¯¡¯ that bumped him up to the A-list. Kang, who stands at 184 centimeters, already looks as if he will be no stranger to audiences. Rumor is spreading fast that Kang has been tapped for the lead role of ``Naega Nabbadda,¡¯¡¯ Ko Hyun-jung¡¯s next drama, though its producers have declined to comment. His feature film debut ``Pangmunja¡¯¡¯ is also waiting for release this year.
